Trecking to see the Gorillas in Rwanda.
Date : 15th march 2007
Location : Virunga Mountains, Northen Rwanda
Only 600 Mountain Gorillas are left alive today. The live in the Virunga mountains which border 3 countries - Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. After spending the night in Rhunhengeri (a tiny village at the base of the mountin) we set off at dawn. We trecked for several hours and everntually came across the Sabyino family which contained the biggest Silverback alive.
They are amazing creatures and very docile when you do approach them correctly - that said the Silverback we saw hit a girl last week so hard he lifted her off the ground.
We were accompanied at all time by Armed Soldiers . They were there 'for our protection' but a little of me thinks it was also to remind us not to think about trying anything funny !! Gorillas nearly had the 'honour' of becoming one of only 3 species discovered and killed to extinction in the same century. Thankfully for teh work of Dian Fossey a small number still survive.
